The irony of the McDormand character is her conviction that going under the knife will win her a man’s heart. By the end, she gets what she wants but all of the men are out of the picture. The beauty here is that she’ll never quite realize that. The last scene that establishes this is definitely not conventional; a goal that the Coens stubbornly take a whack at.

I particularly enjoyed the traditional happy ending for our female protagonist. While most female protagonists walk away with the man, here she bargains for that which her heart most desires in plastic surgery. I love the undertone of two hapless characters being “forced” to carry out a crime because insurance won’t foot the bill. Their logic is hilarious.

Brad Pitt can be so funny, as long as he’s not taking himself too seriously… in any case, it’s about time someone made good use of his habitually spastic arm movements
